SVALBARD17 - mission accomplished!

Today PROTEUS succeeded in reaching twice the Blomstrandbreen glacier face, collecting throughout its path both water samples and marine environmental parameters. At the same time, the Otto drone on the one hand helped PROTEUS to identify the best route to reach the glacier and on the other hand it acquired atmospheric data. Thanks to the data collected from the two vehicles the researchers will be able to characterize for the first time the important phenomena occurring in the entire vertical column near the front of the glacier.

DAY 2 - MOUNTING AND TESTING

First day of actual mission on the field, under the kronebreen glacier, in kongsfjord in svalbard. The purpose of the mission is to take samples of water and to acquire environmental parameters near the glacier, an area that for safety reasons is forbidden to navigation. We were surprised by a sudden strong wind that trapped proteus in an ice grip. We have therefore been forced to cut the safety cable linking the vehicle to the support vessel and to implement a risky recovery operation. Fortunately, with the help of the aircraft drone, we were able to pinpoint the location of the vehicle and then retrieve it. Hope it’s better tomorrow.

DAY 5 - PROTEUS ASSEMBLING

All’arrivo in base ci siamo accorti di problemi del veicolo autonomo marino PROTEUS dovuti molto probabilmente al trasporto. Questo ci ha obbligato alla sostituzione delle schede elettroniche del sistema di controllo. Abbiamo preparato gli strumenti per l’acquisizione dati, rimontato il veicolo, verificato in asciutto tutti i suoi canali di comunicazione con gli strumenti per l’acquisizione dati.

SVALBARD17 – DAY2 timeline

DAY 2 - MOUNTING AND TESTING

Opening of the crates, first functional tests of the marine autonomous robotic vehicle PROTEUS. Detected problem to the main computer of PROTEUS, most probably due to shocks suffered during the transport. Disassembling of the vehicle for substituting the damaged computation board.

Mounted drone, reconnected electronics and antennas. Loaded and tested the battery packs of octocopter and quadricopter.
