SHORT BIO

Massimo Caccia has been Director of the Institute of Intelligent Automation Systems of the Italian National Research Council (ISSIA) since October 2013. 

He received his degree in Electronic Engineering (summa cum laude) from the University of Genova in 1991, and joined the Institute for Ship Automation of the Italian National Research Council in 1993, where he has been leader of the research team on “Autonomous robotic systems and control” since 2005. From 2008 to 2013, he was Head of the institute’s  Genoa Research Division.

He is/was member of the Steering Committee of the European projects EXCELLABUST “Excelling LABUST in marine robotics” (H2020-TWINN-2015 GA 691980) and “CADDY: Cognitive autonomous diving buddy” (EC FP7 ICT- GA 611373), and was Principal Investigator in the following projects: “MORPH Marine robotic system of self-organizing logically linked physical nodes” (EC ICT- GA 288704); “CART – Cooperative Autonomous Robotic Towing system” (EC CART-285878- FP7-SME-2011-1); “MINOAS – Marine INspection rObotic Assistant System” Innovative Product Concepts project (EC FP7 SST.2008.5.2.1)

He is coordinator of the INTERREG project “MATRAC Monitoraggio adattivo in tempo reale con automatizzazione del campionamento – Aree costiere Portuali” (Italy-France collaboration, Maritime Programme).

He acted as international expert in the project EC REGPOT-2008-1 “Developing the Croatian Underwater Robotics Research Potential (CURE)”.

He is principal investigator in the project PRIN 2010-2011 “MARIS: Marine Autonomous Robotics for InterventionS”, and leader of the Work Package “Development of autonomous vehicles” in the Italian Flagship Project RITMARE – La Ricerca ITaliana per il MARE.  He was principal investigator, among others, in the projects: “SEa Surface Autonomous MOdular unit” funded by the National Program of Research in Antarctica (2002-2004), “Harbour and coastal underwater anti-intrusion system” funded by IARP-FESR (2005-07), “Unmanned Multipurpose Vessel” funded by the Scientific and Technological Park of Liguria (2007-08).

He has authored over 160 international journal and conference papers, as well as 8 book chapters
