COSMOLAND – Use of COSMO-SkyMed SAR data for LANDcover classification and surface parameters retrieval over agricultural sites
The mapping of land use and land cover characteristics and the monitoring of the spatial and temporal variability of land surface parameters are important issues in the management of land and water resources, with significant impact for the sustainability of modern agriculture and the environmental protection. Earth Observation (EO) data have proven to be a valuable source of information in applications related to yield forecasting, water stress predictions, irrigation water management and flood protection. In the past, a vast number of experimental and theoretical studies has widely demonstrated the sensitivity of SAR measurements to soil moisture content and vegetation biomass. However, remote sensing is not yet capable to retrieve those surface parameters in an operational way. Nevertheless, an important progress in this field is expected from new SAR missions characterized by a short revisiting time, such as the COSMO-SkyMed constellation. In particular, the synergistic use of COSMO-SkyMed, ENVISAT and ALOS SAR data can lead to the development of operational algorithms providing, for instance, updated landcover maps, soil moisture and vegetation parameter estimates on regular space and temporal intervals. In this context, the objectives of this project have been to develop and validate methods and algorithms for:
- agricultural crop land classification and LAI, crop biomass and soil moisture retrieval;
- integrating the output of these algorithms into crop growth and/or hydrological models to improve, for instance, yield forecast and water management over selected agricultural sites in Southern Italy.
