SHORT BIO

Dario Di Cara was born in Palermo on 26/08/79.

EDUCATION AND PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION
M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering in 2005 and Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering in 2009 both from the University of Palermo.
During his Ph.D., he spent 5 months in 2007 at the Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI), Worcester (USA), working with prof. Alexander Emanuel. The research at WPI was funded by the International Relationship Commission of the University of Palermo.
His collaboration with ISSIA-CNR started during the Ph.D. and continued during a first research fellowship of 1 year funded by ISSIA-CNR of Palermo (2009) and a second fellowship funded by the University of Palermo (for 2 years in 2010 and 2011).
From July 2012 he is a researcher at ISSIA-CNR of Palermo.

HIS RESEARCH TOPICS ARE:

  • Smart grids: he contributed to the development of two smart grid demonstrators in the islands of Ustica and Favignana.
  • Power Line Communication: he studied and developed new coupling systems for medium and low voltage (MV and LV) networks and performed on field tests in real MV and LV networks.
  • Power Quality: he studied and improved the performance in distorted conditions of different current transducers; he developed different kinds of electric power measurement standards with high accuracy also in non-sinusoidal conditions.
  • Electromagnetic compatibility: he studied and improved the reliability of different prototypes of electronic devices in the presence of electromagnetic disturbances.

INTERNATIONAL PATENT
Dario Di Cara is an inventor of the international patent n° WO/2012/085059, title: “Coupling circuit for power line communications”, Priority Data: VA2010A000098 22/12/2012.
The patent is about a low cost coupling circuit for power line communications in medium voltage networks. It was developed with STMicroelectronics.

INTERNATIONAL STANDARD
Dario Di Cara was a participant of the Non-Sinusoidal Situations Working Group, which developed the IEEE 1459–2010: IEEE Standard Definitions for the Measurement of Electric Power Quantities under Sinusoidal, Nonsinusoidal, Balanced or Unbalanced Conditions.

TEACHING ACTIVITY
Dario Di Cara was teacher in different master courses, tutor in electrical and electronic measurement teaching laboratories and assistant supervisor of several degree theses.
