Improving future ecosystem benefits through Earth Observation.

ABSTRACT

Terrestrial and marine ecosystems provide essential services to human societies. Anthropogenic pressures, however, cause threat to ecosystems, leading to habitat degradation, increased risk of collapse and loss of ecosystem services. Knowledge based conservation, management and restoration policies are needed to improve ecosystem benefits in face of increasing pressures. ECOPOTENTIAL makes significant progress beyond the state-of-the-art and creates a unified framework for ecosystem studies and management of protected areas (PA). ECOPOTENTIAL focuses on internationally recognized Pas in Europe and beyond in a wide range of biogeographic regions, and it includes UNESCO, Natura2000 and LTER sites and Large Marine Ecosystems. Best use of Earth Observation (EO) and monitoring data is enabled by new EO open-access ecosystem data service (ECOPERNICUS). Modelling approaches including information from EO data are devised, ecosystem services in current and future conditions are assessed and the requirements of future protected areas are defined. Conceptual approaches based on Essential Variables, Macrosystem Ecology and cross-scale interactions allow for a deeper understanding of the Earth’s Critical Zone. Open and interoperable access to data and knowledge is assured by a GEO Ecosystem Virtual Laboratory Platform, fully integrated in GEOSS. Support to transparent and knowledge-based conservation and management policies, able to include information from EO data, is developed. Knowledge gained in the Pas is upscaled to pan-European conditions and used for planning and management of future Pas. A permanent stakeholder consultancy group (GEO Ecosystem Community of Practice) will be created. Capacity building is pursued  at all levels. SMes are involved to create expertise leading to new job opportunities, ensuring long-term continuation of services. In summary ECOPOTENTIAL use the most advanced technologies to improve future ecosystem benefits for humankind.

ACTIVITIES

The ECOPOTENTIAL project focuses its activities and pilot actions on a targeted set of internationally recognised protected areas (PA) in Europe, European Territories and beyond, including mountain, arid and semi-arid, and coastal and marine ecosystems. Building on the knowledge gained in individual PAs, the ECOPOTENTIAL project will address cross-scale ecological interactions and landscape-ecosystem dynamics at regional to continental scales, using geostatistical methods and the emerging novel approaches in Macrosystems Ecology, which is addressing long-term and large-scale ecological challenges. ECOPOTENTIAL addresses the entire chain of ecosystem-related services, by (a) developing ecosystem data services, with special emphasis on Copernicus services; (b) implementing model output services to distribute the results of the modelling activities; and (c) estimating current and future ecosystem services and benefits, combining ecosystem functions (supply) with beneficiaries needs (demand). In ECOPOTENTIAL all data, model results and acquired knowledge will be made available on common and open platforms, coherent with the Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) data sharing principles and fully interoperable with the GEOSS Common Infrastructure (GCI).

OBJECTIVES

Support both typological and regional mapping of ecosystems (MAES report, 2013). Operational objectives are:

• Design and develop a pre-operational multi-modular system named EO Data for Ecosystem Monitoring (EODESM) for Level 1, 2, 3 and 4 RS data to quantify EBVs and other EV and document quality and uncertainty. An advancement of the state of the art using both pre-existing and new techniques will be achieved particularly when dealing with Very High spatial Resolution (VHR) (e.g., 3rd Party missions: WorldView-3), temporal Resolution (VHT) (e.g., Sentinel) and spectral Resolution (VSR) (e.g., DLR’s hyperspectral EnMap).

• Optimise the selection and use appropriate EO data, considering sensors types, spatial, temporal and spectral resolution, and Copernicus core products for ecosystem classification, mapping and monitoring. Selection will be based on an analysis of requirements made within WP2, Task 6.1, Task 6.2, and Task 7.1.

• Elaborate open source software and products.
