Nicola Ancona received the degree in Computer Science (summa cum laude) from the University of Bari in 1986. He was researcher at Istituto per la Ricerca Scientifica e Tecnologica (I.R.S.T.) in Trento (1988-1990) and at Centro Tecnopolis CSATA Novus Ortus, Valenzano, in Bari (1990-1997) working in the fields of machine vision and robotics. Since December 1997, he joined the Istituto di Studi sui Sistemi Intelligenti per l’Automazione of the CNR where he leads the Bioinformatics and Systems Biology Laboratory. The main scientific interests of Dr. Ancona include applied statistics, statistical learning theory, algorithms for machine learning and computational methods for the assessment of learning machines. The main application domains include the analysis of biological and biomedical signals, in particular the analysis of genetics, genomic and proteomic data.

Nicola Ancona is co-inventor of the United States Patent No. 5,598,488 entitled ”Object Movement Estimator using One-Dimensional Optical Flow” filed on 13-09-1993 and of the European Patent No. 02712268.8-2218-IT0200039 entitled ”System and method for the measurement of the relative position of an object with respect to a point of reference” filed on 23-01-2002.
