The aim of the project is to design and develop a prototype of concentrated photovoltaic and thermal (CPVT) power plant. The basic concept of the new power plant is to use a solar collector to focus the light on high-efficiency photovoltaic (PV) cells, which are cooled by a water circulation system. In this way hot water and electricity are generated at the same time.

A solar tracker is developed to orient the collector mirrors in order to concentrate the sun rays to the PV cells. A proper algorithm is implemented in the solar tracker, to obtain the maximum electrical and thermal energy production at each time of the day.
In the framework of the developing smart grids, electrical utilities require new functionalities from distributed generating power plant. Thus an innovative interface device is also developed, which integrates different communication technologies. The interface device can receive interaction requests from the electric utility through a modern narrowband power line modem. The new interface device can give also commands to the inverter through a serial communication, to reduce or to increment the power production or to vary the power factor. To do this a new prototype of inverter was designed and realized. In this way the PV power plant can participate to the voltage and frequency regulation of the grid.
