ABSTRACT

The scope of this project has been to develop, verify and validate an algorithm to retrieve soil moisture (mv) from both the single (HH or VV) as the dual polarized (HH+HV or VV+VH) GMES S-1 Interferometric Wide Swath image data over land. The user requirements for the S-1 mv product, in terms of coverage, accuracy, resolution and timeliness, beneficial for land applications have been first identified. On the basis of these indications, the mv retrieval algorithm, “Soil MOisture retrieval from multi-temporal SAR data” (SMOSAR) has been developed and implemented. SMOSAR transforms dense (revisiting time of 6-12 days) time series of N dual (i.e. HH & HV or VV & VH) or single (i.e. HH or VV) polarized C-band SAR images into time series of N mv maps at high spatial resolution (i.e. less than 1km) over agricultural sites.
