Earth observation activities are devoted to develop algorithms for processing images from passive and active sensors acquired by satellites and aircrafts, and for retrieving bio-geophysical parameters at various spatial/temporal scales and resolutions.

During the past 30 years, ISSIA has been carrying out research activities on image analysis for Earth observation (EO). The ISSIA EO research unit, currently composed by 9 researchers, 5 assistant researchers, and 1 technical staff, has been and is involved in several projects funded by space agencies, national and international research institutions, as well by the European Commission.
EO activities are devoted to the development of physically based algorithms for processing and interpretation of multi-scale, multi-temporal, multi-frequency data, and for retrieving bio-geophysical parameters at various spatial/temporal scales and resolutions.
Images from both passive (VIS, NIR) and active (Synthetic Aperture Radar) sensors, and acquired by satellites as well as aircraft, are processed to support several applications. Moreover, in situ measurement infrastructures are also developed and exploited for monitoring the status of both soil and sea.

Four main research themes are currently active within the ISSIA EO unit:

  • Retrieval of geo-physical parameters from EO data for  land and sea applications (e.g. soil moisture content,  vegetation biomass, wind direction, oil slicks)
  • Multi-temporal SAR / InSAR for environmental hazard  monitoring.
  • Development of advanced algorithms for the  segmentation, classification, and multi-sensor/multi scale data fusion of EO data with application to the  monitoring of land cover, biodiversity and habitats.
  • Study of the oceanographic processes along the water  column and at the air-sea interface, by means of the  CNR infrastructure ODAS Italy 1 buoy, and the  development of permanent measurement devices on  autonomous and intelligent platforms for time series  data collection.

The main application fields are in the following.

Mitigation of natural and

  • Monitoring of ground displacements (eg. landslides,  subsidence) by processing interferometic stacks of SAR  satellite images.• Flood monitoring by processing SAR/InSAR data
  • Oils slick monitoring by processing both SAR and  optical data

The team participates or leads scientific proposals and projects funded by international /national entities such as EU, ASI, ESA, DLR, JAXA, CSA, NASA, the Italian MIUR, and the Regione Puglia
administration, on present / near future EO missions.

Applied Operational Oceanography
The research regards the development and the technological innovation of tools, techniques and systems for environmental monitoring, with particular, although not exclusive, reference to marine and maritime sector.
The scientific objectives are to study and develop those systems and technologies that can contribute to the analysis of the phenomena that govern climate changes at different spatial and temporal scales in order to maintain and improve the capability to monitor and understand these processes.
In particular, the activities aim at developing and operational using permanent installations and autonomous and intelligent measuring platforms that allow to collect, even during extreme conditions, observations requested to improve the knowledge of the phenomena, to provide a reference for remote-sensed data and to meet the needs of complex models validation.
A significant experience in innovative technologies for the marine environment, in the development of suitable monitoring methods as well as in the integration of measuring equipment and processing systems has been achieved during the years, also taking benefit from the participation to several European international projects (MFSTEP, MERSEA, EuroSITES). Actually, the group is part of the MyOcean, PERSEUS and FixO3 projects.
The working group has gained technical and scientific high level skills in the field of marine technology applied to environmental monitoring and chemical and physical processes along the water column, which can be summarized as follows:

  • embedded real-time autonomous platforms for environmental monitoring of marine and terrestrial remote sites;
  • remote management of complex multi-functional and multisensory measurement systems;
  • smart multiparametric systems for environmental monitoring;
  • adaptive techniques for data transmission over mobile and satellite networks;
  • web-oriented applications for data management;
  • methodologies for meteo-marine processes observation through acoustic techniques;
  • self adaptive data acquisition procedures;
  • data quality control and tele-diagnostics;
  • simulation of the dynamic behavior of moored floating platforms.

The research group operationally manages the off-shore W1-M3A multidisciplinary observatory based on the ODAS Italia 1 spar buoy moored at the centre of the Ligurian Sea (North-Western Mediterranean Sea), one of the few open ocean observatories in the Mediterranean Sea, the only open-ocean eulerian multidispciplinary observing system of the National Research Council of Italy.

The W1-M3A off-shore marine observatory
The W1-M3A observatory is composed by a spar buoy called ODAS Italia 1 (ODAS means Oceanographic Data Acquisition System) and by a subsurface mooring, periodically deployed close to the main buoy.
The observatory is moored at the centre of the Ligurian Sea (009° 06.71’ E 43° 49.42’ N) in the area called Cetacean’s Sanctuary on a deep sea bed of 1200 m at about 80 Km far from the Ligurian coast.
The observatory allows the monitoring of the conditions and the sea state of the Ligurian basin by continuously acquiring meteorological, physical, bio-geochemical and wave measurements.
Over the years, this infrastructure demonstrated its capability for a long term monitoring of the ecosystem from the upper atmosphere to the ocean interface and down to the ocean interior. Indeed, the observing system payload has been recently updated in order to provide real time bio-geochemical data of the euphotic zone (0-100 m) and physical parameters of the upper thermocline (0-500 m) down to the sea bottom.
Near surface atmospheric (meteorological) parameters are monitored by a set of sensors (precision spectral pyranometer, precision infrared radiometer, 2D and 3D sonic anemometer, barometer, thermo-hygrometer, compact meteorological station that doubled some parameters and measures also rainfall) installed on the “ODAS Italia 1” surface buoy.
In the upper ocean, along the buoy body, temperature, salinity, oxygen, fluorescence, turbidity, nutrients content are measured. An innovative system based on a triplet of upward looking echosounders collects ocean wave parameters. The platform is also equipped with two CO2 gas analyzers, the first mounted at about 10 m height above the mean sea level and the second one at 6 m depth to analyze the CO2 exchange between atmosphere and sea.
In the dark region, measurements are collected by sensors deployed on the sub-surface mooring periodically deployed close to the surface buoy. The mooring line is equipped with several conductivity-temperature-pressure sensors at different depths. Sensors on the mooring line operate in an autonomous way and their measurements are periodically available after the recovery and the maintenance operations.
